Deciding between an infrared and a traditional sauna can be a tough choice, as both offer fantastic benefits. Here’s a look at what makes each one unique, to help you figure out which is the better fit for you.
Traditional Saunas When you think of a classic Finnish sauna, this is it: a sauna heater with a pile of rocks. When you pour water on these hot rocks, they create a soft, soothing steam. This high heat is my personal preference. With a Helo Sauna heater, you can reach temperatures of up to 192°F (89°C), which is the zone that helps activate your body's heat shock proteins. The steam you create by adding water to the rocks also raises the humidity in the room, which can help alleviate sinus congestion if you're dealing with a cold or allergies. The intense heat of a traditional sauna also causes a deep, satisfying sweat that helps your body release toxins and can aid in weight loss. Additionally, traditional saunas have been shown to help prevent muscle loss, with benefits similar to a light 30-minute workout. Infrared Saunas Infrared saunas work differently. Instead of heating the air, they use infrared panels that surround the room to heat your body directly. You can even rest against these panels without burning yourself. This allows for a very deep heat penetration into your muscles and joints. Helo infrared heaters can reach a maximum temperature of 150°F, and this lower, more relaxed heat therapy still causes you to sweat profusely and provides a deep therapeutic effect on your body's core. Our Recommendation: The InfraSauna While I personally prefer the intense heat of traditional Finnish therapy, the ideal solution is a combination sauna, which Helo refers to as an InfraSauna.
