Little to no air circulation inside the cabin If you feel like your sauna is not circulating the air inside evenly, it might have to do with the lack of air flow inside the cabin. This issue also causes unfavorable heat distribution inside the cabin, making for an uncomfortable sauna experience. Most often than not, this issue is caused because air-in and air-out openings are installed in the wrong position. |
Heater overheating This is one of the most common problems with saunas and steam rooms. You walk into your sauna or steam room and realize it is too hot for your liking. It happens usually because the heaters overheat. This problem often occurs because of the air-in and air-out opening being too small. The air inside the cabin should also exchange 5-7 times a day. |
Tubular heating elements going rogue (commercial saunas) When commercial saunas have stones filled in too densely, the air flow gets affected and the heating elements have to work extra hard to provide optimum heating inside the cabin. Commercial sauna operators should check the stones every 3-4 months and use at least 8 litres of water 12 times a day. |
Cabin taking too long to heat up If you find your sauna or steam room not heating up properly, chances are the heaters are too small for the size of the cabin. Sometimes, the sauna installers don’t consider the large glass fronts or end up designing the cabin too large. The larger the cabin, the bigger heater it needs to provide optimal heating experience. |
Heat accumulating in the terminal box If the heat is accumulating inside the terminal box, it may be because the heaters are covered, resisting the amount of required volume of air throughout the cabin. Damage or staining of the sauna cabin Your sauna can develop stains or incur damage if the distance between heater and guard rail is less or more than specified. Such an issue is often caused when you install ready-made guardrails that don’t properly fit inside the cabin or are non-compliant with safety measures. |
Control unit not turning off This issue is often caused by the misplacement of heaters and bench sensors. For instance, if bench sensors are placed under the bench or at the same level as the top bench in the cabin, the control unit might refuse to turn off. |

Here are a few things you can do to make sure your sauna or steam rooms run efficiently for long:
Wash your feet Wash your feet before entering the sauna to ensure you don’t carry any dirt inside the cabin. Cleaning your feet before entering the cabin keeps your sauna clean and there is less cleaning to do afterwards. Use Towels and Rugs If you are sweating it means your sauna is working. However, don’t let your sweat come in contact with the surface as the perspired body oil can cause discoloration or stain. Wrap the body parts that are coming in contact with the sauna with a towel. |
Curing Curing refers to keeping the sauna on at full temperature for an hour or so. This process helps clean the sauna of bacteria. Before entering a sauna for the first time, make sure you cure it. Don’t Use Hard Water If you use a steam sauna, you should avoid using hard water. Hard water contains magnesium and calcium salts that can collectively form lime buildup, which is quite difficult to clean. |
